The Oxford historians' discovery of Vienna

From Baroque to Viennese Art Nouveau

From Baroque to Viennese Art Nouveau (Belvedere Palace and Art Collection)

The Belvedere Palace combines, in the same place, one of the most magnificent examples of Baroque architecture, sculpture, and landscape gardening anywhere in Europe and some of the most famous masterpieces of Viennese Secession (art nouveau) painting, including the iconic Kiss by Gustav Klimt. The glamorous and grand 18th-century palace, built for Prince Eugene, the great military commander, with its Versailles-style garden houses one of the most significant collections of fin-de-siècle Secession painting. In this guided lecture tour we will discuss these two high points of Viennese art and culture, which, while widely separated in time, still define the visual landscape of the city and arguably represent Vienna’s most significant contributions to world art.
