“’Portraits of characters, not people’: Modern Portraiture and Self-portraiture at the Leopold Museum
This guided lecture-tour will be concerned with the problem of modern portraiture and self-portraiture on the basis of works at the Leopold Museum. The focus will be on three of the most prominent representatives of Austrian modernism and the Vienna Secession (i.e. the Viennese art nouveau style) movement at the beginning of the 20th century – Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Oskar Kokoschka. We will discuss their works within the context of the European avant-garde, but also against the background of intellectual developments typical of Vienna at the time (Freud’s writings and earlier work on mental illness, the popularity of photo albums of the mentally-ill, debates on anti-semitism, etc.).
Note: Please, note that the Leopold Museum is closed on Tuesdays.
